Passengers Escape Kidnappers in Kogi After Assailants Doze Off
Several passengers abducted along the Itobe-Ajegwu-Anyigba road in Ofu LGA, Kogi State have escaped after their kidnappers fell asleep in the forest. The gunmen attacked two Hummer buses and seized a motorcyclist on Saturday, May 23. Security operatives, vigilantes and hunters trailed the armed hoodlums but managed to arrest only one suspect, Monday Agi, three hours after the ambush. During interrogation, Agi claimed he panicked at the sound of gunshots and fled into the bush with two strangers. Three escapees – Michael Adejo, Monday and Mariam Yakubu – said the kidnappers, armed with AK-47s and pump-action rifles, searched their pockets and stole phones, money and valuables. They crawled away when the assailants fell into a deep sleep, then ran to a nearby village to raise the alarm. Authorities say the arrested suspect is in police custody as the manhunt for the remaining kidnappers intensifies.
