Nostalgic Throwback: My Family Parlour in the 1970s and Early 1980s

Nostalgic Throwback: My Family Parlour in the 1970s and Early 1980s — 1 of 12

In the late 1970s, our sitting room was filled with gadgets that now feel like relics. We had a huge wooden radiogram with built-in record player and radio bands (MW, SW, LW). It even had space to store vinyl and I could hide behind its cabinet. We also owned a hi-fi console with a stackable record player, cassette and 8-track tape decks, plus an illuminated radio dial. Speakers sat on shelves at either end of the room, while a vintage black-and-white TV with retractable doors and VHF/UHF tuners dominated another corner. Later, a top-loading VCR and a Binatone TV Master gaming console joined the scene. I learned to clean video heads, bang the machine for a clearer picture, and play simple tennis games on the big screen. These memories bring back power cuts managed by battery radios, New Year’s Eve picnics with a portable record player, and the joy of tuning foreign radio stations on shortwave during family gatherings.

Exactly! Those wooden radiograms had a unique charm, especially when spinning highlife classics.

It's hard to believe those old consoles really delivered rich sound quality compared to today's digital setups.

I get the charm of bulky radiograms, but modern systems simply deliver much clearer sound without the space and weight hassle.

If you still own those vinyl records, consider transferring them to digital files so you can enjoy those classic tracks on any device.
