Keyamo: Supreme Court Likely to Bar Jonathan from 2027 Presidential Race

In a recent interview with Vanguard, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo argued that former President Goodluck Jonathan is ineligible to run in the 2027 election under Nigeria’s constitution. He noted that Jonathan already served two terms—finishing Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s tenure and winning in 2011—so any bid would fail at the Supreme Court. Keyamo also highlighted internal divisions in the PDP, saying the Turaki-led faction lacks legal authority to field candidates. He warned that pursuing its ticket would only compound Jonathan’s political challenges. Many constitutional lawyers back this view, citing the two-term limit in the 1999 Constitution.
