IGP Disu Urges Nationwide Sensitisation on Environmental Crimes with NGO Partnership

IGP Disu Urges Nationwide Sensitisation on Environmental Crimes with NGO Partnership

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has called for sustained national awareness campaigns to tackle environmental offences. During a courtesy visit from CRUX Environmental Rights Advocacy and Development, Disu highlighted how indiscriminate dumping and poor waste management fuel flooding and health hazards. He also raised concerns over wildlife depletion, illegal hunting, and vandalism by scavengers. Rather than creating a new unit, Disu said he will task Commissioners of Police to work with communities and civil defence agencies on sensitisation and reporting. CRUX proposed a framework for joint monitoring, capacity building and enforcement guided by existing constitutional and Police Act provisions.

I agree. Local councils should organise town hall forums, leverage market announcements, and partner with schools for regular sensitisation.

Sensitisation alone won't fix much if enforcement and funding fall short. Communities need actual backing, no just awareness.

Police and NGOs could train youth groups to report illegal dumping, organise scheduled community cleanups, and map trouble spots for quick response.
