Tricycle Rider Killed in Clash with Police in Jalingo
A tricycle operator died on June 16 around 5pm after a police stop-and-search at the Road Block area of Jalingo, Taraba State. Witnesses say a police officer jumped from a patrol vehicle to arrest one of the riders, triggering a collision between two tricycles carrying passengers. Frustrated operators then blocked the road in protest, bringing traffic to a standstill. The crowd clashed with officers and tear gas was deployed. Some tricycle operators alleged that police opened fire, citing ongoing disputes over alleged night-time extortion. However, the Taraba State Police Command denied any shooting. The public relations officer said the deceased collided with another tricycle while trying to evade the checkpoint. He confirmed no shots were fired and noted two injured passengers were taken to hospital.
