‘Salt It Out’ Campaign: NGOs Call on Nigeria to Cut Daily Salt for Better Health
Nigeria marks World Salt Awareness Week 2026 as three health organisations urge stronger measures to reduce sodium intake. They want policies that ensure safe, nutritious diets for all. The coalition warns that Nigerians consume about 10 grams of salt per day—double the World Health Organization’s recommendation. Excessive salt intake is driving up cases of hypertension, stroke, heart disease and kidney failure. They are calling on the government to adopt enforceable sodium targets for processed foods, require front-of-pack warning labels and step up public education. Individuals are also urged to swap added salt for natural spices and boost fresh fruits and vegetables in their meals. Running from May 11–17 under the theme “6 Ways to 6 Grams,” the “Salt It Out” campaign challenges both industry and citizens to lower daily salt intake and protect national health.
