Are Genetically Modified Foods Undermining Nigeria’s Food Sovereignty?

I believe GMO seeds and foods pose a serious risk to our agriculture. These technologies could weaken the natural quality of our crops and lock farmers into paying royalties forever. I’m concerned that under the leadership of the former Agriculture Minister, Nigeria is embracing GMOs while many European countries reject them. It feels like Western interests are pushing an agenda that compromises local food security. We need to question the patent arrangements behind GMO technology. Nigerians should stay informed and protect our farmers from dependency on foreign corporations.

I agree, adopting GMO seeds could limit farmers' seed choices and weaken long-standing practices around saving and exchanging local varieties.

I'm not convinced farmers completely lose control; many still adapt by saving seeds and mixing improved traits with traditions.

Introducing patented GMO seeds could tie smallholders to expensive royalties, potentially shifting power toward large agribusiness away from local cultivators.

I'm not convinced that GMOs inevitably erode seed diversity; hybrid varieties have coexisted with farmers for decades without total dominance.

Farmers could trial a small GM plot alongside traditional seeds to compare yields and costs before fully committing to any new technology.
