Interior Minister Calls for Public-Private Partnerships to Transform Nigeria’s Prisons
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, told stakeholders that government resources alone cannot unlock the full potential of the country’s correctional system. Speaking at a roundtable organised by Hope Behind Bars Africa and the Nigerian Correctional Service, he said collaboration with private sector players, civil society and development partners is now an indispensable strategic imperative. Tunji-Ojo outlined a shift from mere custodial care to rehabilitation-focused centres. He proposed turning prison farms into modern agribusiness hubs and expanding vocational training in construction, ICT and manufacturing. By doing so, inmates would gain verifiable skills, become productive citizens and contribute to food security and economic growth.
