Niger State Police Crack Goat Theft Ring, Arrest Three Suspects — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Niger State Police Command announced the arrest of three men linked to a livestock theft syndicate. In a statement on March 25, the spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said they targeted goats, rams and sheep across the FCT, Nasarawa and Niger State. On March 16 at about 11:45 a.m., operatives from Maje Division intercepted a red Volkswagen Golf (reg. no. BWR 350 CL) in the Tungan-Shanu area. The vehicle carried a stolen goat and three occupants: Mohammed Ali (37), Shuaibu Ibrahim (37) and Ilyasu Rabiu. During questioning, they confessed to stealing the goat from a nearby community. The suspects have been charged to court and will face prosecution for livestock theft.

What strategies could local farmers adopt to prevent livestock theft after these recent arrests in Nasarawa and Niger State?

Do the farmers here already have any community watch systems in place to help deter thieves?

I hear arrests help, but relying only on them won't stop thieves. Farmers need local patrols and stronger pen security too.

It's curious that a whole ring targeted goats, rams and sheep yet authorities only spoke about three suspects so far.

While it's good to see arrests, we shouldn't assume the syndicate's leaders are caught just because three men turned up.

Community watch groups could coordinate with the police to report suspicious movements around grazing fields promptly and safeguard livestock.
