Nigeria Secures International Partners to Relaunch National Shipping Line

Nigeria Secures International Partners to Relaunch National Shipping Line

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has announced major progress in reviving a national shipping carrier. He revealed that leading global operators are on board to boost Nigeria’s maritime capacity. Oyetola clarified that the federal port modernisation programme covers all regions. He confirmed that upgrades are underway for ports in Warri, Port Harcourt, Onne, Calabar, Apapa and Tin Can Island. New deep seaports have also been approved for Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Ondo states. The revived carrier will reduce reliance on foreign lines, keep maritime value within Nigeria and create jobs. It complements the soon-to-be-disbursed Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund for local shipowners. At a Lagos stakeholders’ retreat, the minister emphasised strict accountability and data-driven monitoring. He signed performance bonds with agencies under his ministry to ensure measurable outcomes.

I notice Oyetola emphasised port modernisation, but past maritime projects faced delays due to unclear timelines and funding gaps.

Don't we risk overreliance on foreign operators instead of building local expertise and capacity in our maritime sector?
