Sunday Igboho: From Security Hero to a New Crisis
I first heard stories about Sunday Igboho in Ibadan. They said he was bulletproof and could appear and disappear like a Nollywood hero. He reemerged in 2021 to tackle insecurity in the Southwest. His popularity soared, but he soon drifted into politics and formed the unlicensed Iru Ekun security network. He openly claimed state backing that never materialized. Nigeria has seen groups like Bakassi Boys and ESN start with noble aims before spiraling out of control. Extra-legal approaches risk exploitation by political interests and could ignite ethnic tensions. We must decide if short-term relief is worth the long-term risk. History shows that solutions operating outside the law carry the seeds of tomorrow’s crises.
