Infantino Defends FIFA Plan to Sell Stake in Commercial Subsidiary

Infantino Defends FIFA Plan to Sell Stake in Commercial Subsidiary — 1 of 2
1 / 2

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended a proposal to sell up to a 20% stake in a new commercial subsidiary, insisting that the plan is an opportunity rather than an obligation for member associations. The proposal has drawn criticism from football confederations, with European football leaders arguing that the World Cup should not be treated as an asset for sale. FIFA says it will keep full regulatory, sporting and governance control of its competitions and calendars. Member associations have until September 19, 2026, to decide, with a proposed immediate financial incentive of between $20 million and $40 million linked to the vote.

Selling a minority stake is not automatically a bad idea; the real issue is whether FIFA clearly protects decision-making and long-term value.

FIFA should publish the proposed governance rules, investor role, and how any proceeds would be shared before member associations decide.
