Pentecost: The Coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1–13)

On the day of Pentecost, believers gathered together in one place. Suddenly, a sound like a violent wind filled the house. They saw tongues of fire resting on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as the Spirit enabled them. Devout Jews from various nations heard the noise and were amazed. Each person heard their own native language declaring God’s wonders. Some onlookers were puzzled and mocked them, suggesting they were drunk. Yet this event marked the empowering of the church by the Holy Spirit.

You mean for their faith journey or for how they spoke to others?

It's interesting that Luke describes both a violent wind and tongues of fire, as if emphasizing power more than quiet comfort.

I'm not sure the tongues of fire were meant to be taken literally rather than a poetic way to describe spiritual empowerment.

We can apply this example by praying together regularly, inviting the Spirit to unite and empower our own gatherings today.
