Houthi-Government Fighting Resumes in Yemen’s Marib and Taiz
Fighting has resumed between Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi-backed government forces across the Taiz and Marib fronts. Government drone strikes reportedly killed Houthi fighters and commanders near Taiz, while further strikes hit positions in the surrounding mountainous areas. The Houthis also reportedly fired ballistic missiles and drones towards Marib, damaging homes and vehicles and injuring civilians in residential areas and displacement camps. Government forces said they shot down two drones and struck Houthi positions on the city’s western front. Political groups in Taiz are urging Yemen’s internationally recognised government to take stronger military action, including opening new fronts against Houthi-controlled areas. The escalation has renewed fears that Yemen could slide back into wider war after the 2022 UN-brokered truce largely reduced major fighting. What do you think has been achieved by the October 7 attacks, given the wider regional conflict that followed?
