Police Must Protect Accountability, Not Shield Officers From Scrutiny
A public appeal asking the Inspector-General of Police to defend AIG Moshood Jimoh against social-media criticism has renewed questions about accountability and public trust in the Nigeria Police Force. No one should face cyberbullying, defamation or harassment. Officers, like every Nigerian, can seek lawful remedies where their rights are violated. However, institutional protection should not be confused with shielding a senior public officer from legitimate scrutiny. Jimoh has held prominent roles, including Force Public Relations Officer and Lagos State Commissioner of Police, and has faced public criticism, petitions and controversies over the years. These include concerns about police conduct during protests, alleged rights violations, his response to a UN report on police corruption, and remarks about former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom. The Police leadership should protect the integrity of the institution through impartial review and accountability. Public trust grows when no officer, regardless of rank, is seen as above scrutiny or professional standards.
