UK Nigerians Earning £2,600 Worse Off than ₦60,000 Earners at Home, Tinubu’s Adviser Warns

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Tinubu, says a Nigerian in the UK earning £2,600–£2,800 monthly may end up worse off than someone on ₦60,000 in Nigeria once rent, utilities and living costs are deducted. He explained that after paying rent—often around £800—plus power, internet and food, take-home pay shrinks. Many migrants take two or three jobs, and some even die homeless on London streets under harsh conditions. By contrast, a ₦60,000 earner in Nigeria benefits from family support, low basic service costs and community loans. While UK jobs offer good infrastructure and healthcare, migrants struggle to save for a car or house. Bwala also highlighted recent federal healthcare initiatives, including a 50% dialysis subsidy in federal hospitals and free caesarean section services, aimed at reducing domestic burdens.

How do you think living costs in the UK compare to Nigeria's, given this adviser's warning for UK Nigerians earning £2,600?

I agree, UK rents and bills be something else. That £2,600 fit vanish fast compared to our ₦60k life.

It's hard to accept how a higher nominal salary abroad still leaves many worse off once rent and utilities are taken out.

I'm not convinced this paints the full picture. Other factors like social benefits and long-term career growth could tip the balance in the UK's favor.

To make it work abroad, consider shared housing and budgeting tools to trim living expenses and stretch that £2,600 take-home as far as possible.
