Should African States Shut South African Embassies Over Rising Xenophobia?
South Africa’s recent wave of violence against fellow Africans reveals a disturbing pattern of attacks, arson, rape and looting targeting migrants from Nigeria, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and beyond. Reports suggest the government has offered no shelters or protection, leaving victims desperate and exposed. Despite this record, South Africa maintains diplomatic missions and operates businesses across the continent. Many question why countries should tolerate embassies and companies representing a state that fails to uphold basic human decency towards its neighbours. African governments must demand accountability and reparations for victims. They should consider measures such as closing diplomatic posts and expelling businesses profiting from ties to a country tolerating organised hatred. These steps would send a powerful message: Pan-African unity cannot coexist with impunity for Afrophobic violence.
