Akara Remi: When Political Defense Costs Our Honour

I have a rule about observing Nigeria: once an educated person gives up independent judgment to defend any government, they sacrifice their honour. The First Lady’s remarks on selling akara and making kuli-kuli sparked national outrage. She turned a deep economic crisis into roadside survival tips. Yet some educated elites defend her by wilfully misunderstanding public anger. You cannot demand sacrifice from the poor while preserving extravagance above. That hypocrisy offends our collective dignity. Honour wasted often hurts most in private.

Do we really lose our integrity when we defend any government without scrutiny, even over remarks like selling akara and making kuli-kuli?

You're spot on. Blind defense, whether akara or kuli-kuli talk, fit dull our moral sense over time.

The First Lady's suggestion about akara and kuli-kuli feels out of touch, especially during a deep economic crisis.

Calling anyone who defends government dishonourable ignores complex reasons people may have for support.

We should focus on improving food affordability and dialogue with leaders instead of debating symbolic gestures over akara.
