Insights into Nigeria’s Electricity Gap: DisCo Performance Unveiled
I used Power BI to analyse public data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission between 2017 and 2023. The focus was on distribution companies and their billing efficiency, revenue collection, metering coverage and ATC&C losses. The findings reveal wide disparities. Ikeja and Eko DisCos achieved ATC&C losses of 23.6% and 27.0%, while Kaduna and Yola exceeded 70%. Out of 12.1 million customers, 6.3 million remain unmetered. DisCos billed ₦6.6 trillion but collected only ₦4.5 trillion, leaving about ₦2.1 trillion unpaid. Key recommendations include expanding digital payment systems, accelerating mass metering to reduce estimated billing, and strengthening energy accounting and operational transparency across DisCos.
