Alleged Ethnic Slur During Ibadan Property Dispute Raises Concern Over Tribalism in Law

I witnessed a troubling property dispute in Ibadan that, in my view, exposed ethnic prejudice in a setting where the law and professionalism should come first. After tenants reported that a landlord’s agents were removing a roof and allegedly taking properties, we went to Iyanganku Police Station. During a phone call with the lawyer handling the property, I introduced myself as a fellow lawyer. He allegedly responded by questioning how an Igbo person from the South-East could tell him, a Yoruba man, what to do. The dispute should have been resolved through lawful procedures, facts and due process, not intimidation or ethnic identity. I commend the officers at Iyanganku Police Station for handling the matter professionally. No Nigerian should be treated as an outsider or denied respect and justice because of their tribe or where they live.
