House Probes Mining Marshals Over Alleged ₦2bn Misconduct

The House of Representatives has mandated an investigation into the Mining Marshals Corps, a specialised unit of over 2,200 personnel drawn from the NSCDC. The probe follows a motion adopted by Rep. Abdulmaleek Danga during Wednesday’s plenary. Established in March under the Solid Minerals Development and Interior ministries, the unit was charged with securing mining sites, fighting illegal mining and banditry, and protecting federal revenue. It was created under Section 3 of the NSCDC Act and the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007. Lawmakers alleged the corps deviated from its mandate, leading to wrongful arrests of legitimate miners. They also raised concerns over financial impropriety after reports of more than ₦2 billion lodged in a former state commander’s bank account. Instead of facing inquiry, the commander was simply redeployed, fueling suspicions of compromise by illegal mining syndicates. The House Committee on Solid Minerals Development will investigate these allegations, the source of funding for operational vehicles, and all external financial inflows. It will also review the unit’s legal framework and structure and recommend a compliant security model. A report is expected within four weeks.
