INEC Revises Timetable for Party Primaries Ahead of 2027 General Election

INEC Revises Timetable for Party Primaries Ahead of 2027 General Election

In a press release, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced adjustments to its timetable for the 2027 General Election. Following a meeting with political parties on 24 March 2026, INEC agreed to extend the period for submitting party registers. Parties may now hold primaries between 23 April and 30 May 2026. The commission requires each party to submit its register of members at least 21 days before its chosen primary date. As a result, the deadline for register submission is now 10 May 2026. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, signed off on the revised schedule on 27 March 2026.

With INEC extending the party register deadline, how do you think this will affect smaller parties' ability to compete effectively?

Are we sure this extension won't just favor parties with existing networks, leaving smaller groups struggling to register?

Parties should use the extended timeline to strengthen membership vetting and internal training, ensuring they meet requirements before submitting their registers.
