NECO Denounces ‘Miracle Centre’ Tag for Kogi School After SSCE Abduction

NECO Denounces ‘Miracle Centre’ Tag for Kogi School After SSCE Abduction

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has rejected claims that Government Secondary School, Olowa in Dekina LGA, Kogi State, is a “miracle centre” for exam malpractice. This clarification follows comments by the commanding officer of the Nigerian Army’s 21 Battalion, who labelled the school a hub for cheating after gunmen abducted students, the principal and a NECO ad hoc official during the SSCE. In a statement, NECO’s Acting Director of Information debunked suggestions that the school only enrolled external candidates. The council confirmed that Olowa has presented SSCE candidates since 2000 and that all 28 students registered for the 2026 exam are legitimate. It also highlighted steady enrolment figures over recent years and noted that the Kogi State Government paid fees for 51 students in the 2026 WASSCE. NECO expressed sympathy for the victims and commended security agencies for rescuing most of the abductees. The council reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on malpractice and urged public figures to verify facts before making damaging statements about educational institutions.

What impact do you think NECO's denial will have on public confidence in that school after the abduction scare?

I agree, this denial could further erode trust and make parents more hesitant to send their children there.

It seems odd that an army officer would brand the school a malpractice hub without full evidence. NECO's swift response raises more questions.

While exam security matters, we shouldn't rush to label every unusual incident as proof of malpractice or miracle workings.

Schools need clear protocols for handling security threats and transparent exam procedures to rebuild trust after these unsettling allegations.
