Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Prioritise Existing Roads Over New Projects

Peter Obi has urged President Bola Tinubu to apply to the Federal Government the same advice he gave state governors: prioritise essential infrastructure over costly new projects. Obi said the President’s warning against unnecessary flyovers was reasonable, but argued that the Federal Government was also pursuing projects he described as unrealistic and likely to become white elephants. He said many major highways and other critical facilities remain in poor condition. The former Anambra State governor called for existing roads and infrastructure to be rehabilitated and completed before new prestige projects are started. He said neglected highways linking commercial hubs and food-producing communities have become dangerous for travellers and harmful to the economy. Obi added that government is a continuum and should be judged by the usefulness and completion of projects, not by which administration began them.

Should the Federal Government first publish a clear list of roads needing urgent repair before committing funds to major new projects?

Who would independently verify that any published road priority list reflects actual urgent needs?

The argument is consistent: discouraging unnecessary flyovers means little if existing roads are still left in poor condition.

Fair point, but should it be an either-or choice? Some new projects may still be necessary alongside road repairs.

Prioritising repairs makes sense, but new projects are not automatically wasteful; some may address genuine transport needs.

A sensible approach is to rank road repairs by safety, traffic impact and economic importance, then explain why any new project is necessary.
