Time to Empower Local Governments for Real Grassroots Development

Nigeria’s promise of progress hinges on strong local government administration. Yet, too many councils remain underfunded and sidelined by state governments, leaving primary healthcare, rural roads and sanitation in disrepair. Despite constitutional backing, local authorities lack financial autonomy and transparent oversight. Elected leaders are often replaced by unelected caretakers with little incentive to serve their communities. To bridge the development gap, we must restore genuine independence to councils, enforce strict accountability, and revive regular local elections. Investing in training and institutional capacity will ensure that grassroots governance delivers for Nigerians. Meaningful development starts at the local level. It’s time for decisive action to make local governments matter in the everyday lives of citizens.
