Court of Appeal Confirms Nenadi Usman’s Leadership, Dismisses Julius Abure’s Appeal
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed Julius Abure’s challenge of the Labour Party leadership. A three-member panel unanimously upheld the Federal High Court ruling that recognised a 29-member caretaker committee under Nenadi Usman. Justice Oyejoju Oyewumi, with Justices Abba Mohammed and Eberechi Nyesom-Wike, relied on an earlier Supreme Court decision. That ruling nullified the convention that returned Abure as national chairman and directed INEC to recognise Usman’s tenure. The appellate court noted Abure’s appeal lacked merit and accused him of forum shopping. It awarded N10 million in costs against him for abusing court process. The court affirmed both Usman’s standing to bring the case and the lower court’s jurisdiction, describing the decision as constitutionally sound and necessary to fill a leadership vacuum.
