WHO Cuts Suspected Ebola Cases in Central Africa from 906 to 116; Confirmed Infections Reach 330
The World Health Organization has revised the number of suspected Ebola cases after further laboratory testing. The tally fell from over 900 to 116 as many patients were diagnosed with malaria, meningitis, typhoid or other illnesses with similar symptoms. So far, there are 330 confirmed Ebola infections, including 321 in the Democratic Republic of Congo and nine in Uganda. The outbreak has claimed 49 lives, while six patients have recovered. Health officials warn that suspected figures can change as investigations continue. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment yet exists. Preventive measures remain the main tool for containment.
