Kebbi Govt Dismisses “Sai Malam” Insurgency as Cybercrime Scam

Kebbi Govt Dismisses “Sai Malam” Insurgency as Cybercrime Scam

Kebbi’s Commissioner for Information and Culture has strongly denied reports of a new insurgent group called “Sai Malam.” He says security agencies have uncovered a cybercriminal network known locally as Yan-Vocal, not an armed terror cell. Authorities have made several arrests in the online extortion ring. The commissioner also rebuffed claims that 130 children die daily in the state, noting such figures would exhaust the entire under-five population in months. UNICEF has disowned the faulty statistic, which the commissioner blamed on opponents seeking to tarnish the governor ahead of the 2027 elections. The News Agency of Nigeria has vowed to use its reporters to stem sensational fake news as election season approaches.

Could this supposed 'cybercriminal network' be a cover for more serious insider lapses in Kebbi's security agencies?

That's possible, maybe they're using the cybercrime angle to mask deeper security failures.

It seems odd that an alleged insurgency vanishes into thin air once officials tag it as cybercrime.

I'm not convinced this announcement clears up anything; it just shifts responsibility away from potential security gaps.

Authorities should publish detailed findings on the Yan-Vocal arrests, including tools used and evidence, to build public trust.
