Why Pan-Africanism Is Cracking: From Diplomatic Betrayal to Grassroots Xenophobia

Africa’s dream of continental unity is under siege. Aggressive nationalism and bilateral deals have replaced Pan-African solidarity. State leaders blocked the only African candidate for UN Secretary-General, weaponizing procedural rules against Macky Sall. On the ground, xenophobic violence has surged. In South Africa, vigilante groups target migrants with impunity, while in Ghana protests demand Nigerians be expelled. Regional institutions struggle to respond. Security ties have frayed.
