Nigeria Loses ₦5 Trillion Yearly to Food Waste – New Study Reveals
A recent study by Rome Business School Nigeria finds that poor infrastructure and weak storage systems cause Nigeria to lose about 35 million metric tons of perishable food every year, costing the economy up to ₦5 trillion. This waste drives up household food prices and undermines nutrition. Many families now spend as much as 70% of their income on food and rely heavily on single-serve sachet packaging. The report highlights cold chain logistics as a major untapped investment opportunity worth an estimated $10 billion. Solar-powered storage and smart cooling systems could dramatically reduce post-harvest losses. Despite these challenges, Nigeria’s food economy is evolving. The foodservice sector is projected to grow from $12.4 billion in 2026 to $21.4 billion by 2031, driven by urbanisation, digital payments and new business models.
