APC Slams Gov. Otti’s Decision to Name Umuahia Bus Terminal After Prof. Nnenna Oti

APC Slams Gov. Otti’s Decision to Name Umuahia Bus Terminal After Prof. Nnenna Oti

The Abia State chapter of the APC has criticised Governor Alex Otti for naming the new Umuahia Central Bus Terminal after Professor Nnenna Oti. The party described the move as controversial and warned it could erode public confidence in the electoral process. The APC argued that Professor Oti only fulfilled her constitutional duty as the INEC Returning Officer during the 2023 governorship election and questioned why she should receive special recognition from the election’s beneficiary. They cautioned that rewarding electoral officials could set a dangerous precedent ahead of the 2027 polls. The party called on Professor Oti to reject the honour if she values her integrity. It also threatened to petition the ICPC to probe her ties with the governor and her conduct during the collation process. The APC urged Governor Otti to reconsider and instead immortalise long-serving state patriots with proven developmental contributions.

What might be driving the APC's strong reaction to naming the bus terminal after Professor Nnenna Oti?

It seems odd to complain about honouring a respected academic when the party itself once supported diverse recognitions.

I'm not convinced this gesture really undermines confidence; naming buildings after public figures happens all the time.

Perhaps a transparent forum could explain the selection criteria and address any concerns on both sides straightaway.
