How Nigeria’s Early Missteps Shaped Lee Kuan Yew’s Singapore Blueprint
Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew admitted he learned key lessons from Nigeria’s post-independence struggles while building Singapore into a first-world nation. Nigeria won independence in 1960; Singapore followed in 1965. On a 1966 visit to Lagos, he noted that some Nigerian leaders used public office for personal gain rather than national development. He recalled a finance minister who raised shoe tariffs to fund his own factory after retirement. Lee Kuan Yew concluded that abundant resources alone cannot replace a cohesive national identity and honest, meritocratic leadership. Nigeria’s experience underscores the need to prioritise shared goals over private enrichment.
