Breaking the Cycle of Youth Unemployment in Nigeria
Youth unemployment is one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges. Millions of graduates enter the job market every year only to face long waits or underemployment. This situation undermines personal well-being and national growth. Key drivers include rapid population growth, a skills gap in our education system, weak industrial development and governance issues. Many graduates leave school without the practical or vocational skills demanded by employers. At the same time, limited business expansion and investor confidence reduce job openings. The effects are far-reaching: rising poverty and crime, social unrest and a worrying brain drain as talented young Nigerians seek work abroad. Mental health struggles also multiply when capable youth lack hope and opportunity. Addressing this crisis requires a united effort. We must boost entrepreneurship with training and affordable credit. Education must align more closely with labour market needs. A business-friendly environment and stronger public-private partnerships can unlock new jobs. Supporting SMEs and vocational programmes will empower youth to become both job creators and job seekers.
