Katsina Schoolchildren Call for Urgent Action on Climate Risks

Katsina Schoolchildren Call for Urgent Action on Climate Risks

Children from the Child Rights Advocacy Club in Mashi LGA of Katsina have urged local authorities to address worsening climate and environmental hazards that threaten their safety and schooling. Supported by Save the Children through the Education Cannot Wait project, they presented their concerns to the Mashi Council leadership and the district head. The young advocates warned that blocked drainage, poor waste management, and lack of clean water and sanitation put their health and learning at risk. They appealed for reliable water sources, safe toilets with hand-washing facilities, improved waste disposal, and stronger school security measures. The children also called for tree-planting campaigns, stricter anti-deforestation enforcement, and the rehabilitation of drainage systems to reduce flooding around schools. In response, council officials pledged to tighten illegal logging bans, establish environmental clubs in schools, and work with communities to create greener, safer learning environments.

It's notable that the advocacy comes from children themselves, but I wonder if authorities will follow through beyond promises.
