Anambra Bans Midweek Burials and Lavish Condolence Gifts in New Funeral Law
The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed legislation to regulate funeral rites and curb extravagant spending. It outlaws burials from Monday to Friday and restricts condolence gifts to money, one jar of palm wine, one carton of beer or one crate of soft drinks. Funeral ceremonies must now take place on Saturdays and conclude within a single day. Wake-keep events are abolished, and all religious services must end by 9pm. Food, live bands and cultural entertainment at vigils are no longer permitted. The law also bans public billboards and posters of the deceased, limits directional signs to seven days before burial, and forbids public display or dancing with caskets. Undertakers are capped at six persons and unclaimed corpses over two months old may be buried in state-designated grounds. Enforcement committees will oversee death registration and burial approvals. Offenders face up to ₦100,000 in fines or six months’ imprisonment.
