FHC Unveils 2026 Practice Directions to Fast-Track Pre-Election Disputes
The Federal High Court has issued its Federal High Court (Pre-Election) Practice Directions, 2026 to ensure fair, impartial and swift handling of all pre-election cases nationwide. These new rules, released under powers from the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2026, repeal the 2022 version. They also adopt relevant Civil Procedure Rules for matters not covered. Court registries will now open on weekends and public holidays for filing. Every case must start by originating summons and be set down for hearing within seven days of process exchange. Judges may use email and virtual hearings to minimise delays. The directions focus parties on substantive issues, limit interlocutory motions, require all relevant respondents in primary election challenges, and cap adjournments at two per case until judgment is delivered.
