Gagdi Rebukes Atiku, Obi Over Election-Timing Objections to State Police Reform

Gagdi Rebukes Atiku, Obi Over Election-Timing Objections to State Police Reform

Chairman of the House Navy Committee Hon. Yusuf Gagdi has challenged critics who link the proposed state police bill to the 2027 elections instead of its capacity to tackle rising insecurity. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Gagdi faulted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi for focusing on timing rather than the policy’s substance. He said the new Section 214 framework includes checks to prevent governors from abusing their powers. Under the revised plan, governors nominate candidates to the Federal Police Council, which vets and appoints state police commissioners. This process, Gagdi argues, will safeguard officers from arbitrary removal and reduce politicisation. He also stressed that state policing will complement—not replace—the federal force, broadening Nigeria’s security architecture and spurring regional investment in law enforcement.

How do you think Gagdi's point about state police reform being more than election strategy impacts the fight against rising insecurity?

I agree that treating state police reform as a real security tool, not just election fodder, can reduce crime more effectively.

It's interesting how election-timing criticisms can distract from evaluating whether state police reform truly addresses the growing security challenges across the states.

I'm not convinced that attacks on timing are just political noise. Maybe picking apart the bill's actual provisions would be more productive.

Focusing on clear implementation steps and accountability measures might help ensure state police reforms deliver real security results for communities.
