Pentagon Chief Dismisses Claims of US Munitions Shortage

Pentagon Chief Dismisses Claims of US Munitions Shortage

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told CBS’s Face the Nation that reports of a munitions stockpile crisis are “manufactured.” He insisted America’s reserves remain strong and continue to grow. Hegseth’s comments came just before Washington and Tehran announced a deal to end hostilities across the Middle East and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Concerns over depleted weapons stores rose after the acting US Navy Secretary cited the conflict as a reason to pause arms sales to Taiwan. At an April hearing, Hegseth had said refilling some munitions could take months or years. He now clarifies that only certain types require longer lead times, while overall production has ramped up. Critics have questioned Pentagon cost estimates, with Senator Mark Kelly warning key missile inventories are still drawn down.

Do you think reports of a US munitions shortage were exaggerated to influence public opinion before that Washington-Tehran deal?

Absolutely, it smelled like hype just to shape opinion before that deal.

It's interesting he calls the shortage claims "manufactured" right before releasing news of a deal with Tehran.

I find it hard to accept that a growing stockpile means there's no risk of supply issues down the road.

Maybe independent oversight of munitions reserves would help build trust and prevent future claims of shortage or surplus manipulation.
