U.S. Lawmakers Blame Sharia Law for Rising Christian Persecution in Nigeria
In a recent U.S. congressional session, Representative Chris Smith praised Ambassador Mike Waltz for bringing global attention to attacks on Nigerian Christians. Senior U.S. officials warned that Sharia law in parts of northern Nigeria continues to enable church burnings and arrests of worshippers. They urged the Nigerian government to take stronger action against groups like Boko Haram, ISIS West Africa and armed herders. Ambassador Waltz highlighted U.N. efforts to document abuses and called on Nigeria to boost security cooperation and protect religious freedom. He noted that pastors have been executed and people arrested merely for wearing a cross. I believe these atrocities are underreported, possibly due to government suppression of the media. Why should someone be targeted for wearing a symbol of faith? Many hold President Tinubu responsible for not curbing extremist violence.
