Lagos Changed My Money Mindset: I Earned Three Times More Than in Onitsha

Lagos taught me that making serious money often requires a completely different mindset from the one I had before arriving. Even though I was sick for much of the year I spent there, I made about three times what I could have made in Onitsha over the same period. My sister and her husband had fully adapted to Lagos life. Their conversations were always about millions, and my younger brother, a photographer, could ask for ₦15 million for a few days of work. The pace, prices and hustle were on another level. I also watched my sister become tougher and faster, while her husband woke up at 3 a.m. to prepare for work. After a few months of joining the hustle, I left Lagos with a new perspective. For people who have lived and done business in Lagos and other Nigerian cities, did Lagos truly change your mindset about money, or is the so-called Lagos mentality overrated?

A useful lesson is to compare income with living costs, health, and the specific opportunities available before deciding which city pays better.
