Morocco’s King Denies Senegal President’s Request to Pardon Jailed AFCON Final Fans

Morocco’s King Denies Senegal President’s Request to Pardon Jailed AFCON Final Fans

Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said he wrote to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, seeking clemency for supporters arrested after violence at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat. He explained that he tried every avenue—legal, diplomatic and even through the Tijaniyya religious order—but received no reply. “If there is another way, let us be told,” he urged. The Rabat Court of Appeal recently upheld convictions for 18 Senegalese fans. Sentences range from three months to one year, plus fines up to MAD 5,000. A French national of Algerian origin was also jailed for three months. Defense lawyers argued that video evidence should verify identities, but judges ruled the existing proof of rioting, pitch invasion and attacks on security forces was sufficient.

Maybe the violence after the final outweighs the sympathy argument, and strict consequences send a stronger message.

Senegal's leadership might need to explore new mediation routes or focus on broader fan safety reforms going forward.
