Akwa Ibom Governor Insists Local Councils Receive 100% of Federal Allocations

Akwa Ibom Governor Insists Local Councils Receive 100% of Federal Allocations

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Bassey Eno has denied claims that his administration interferes with local government funds. He stated that all 31 councils receive their federal allocations directly and in full. The governor explained that the only deductions made are for jointly agreed statutory obligations, such as teachers’ salaries, allowances and gratuities. These are processed through the Joint Accounts Committee before councils access the remaining balance. Governor Eno made the remarks during the commissioning of a community development project, praising the host council chairman for using funds effectively. He noted that the successful project demonstrates the capacity of well-funded local governments to drive grassroots development. His statement comes amid a national discussion on the financial autonomy of local government areas, positioning Akwa Ibom as an example of compliance with federal fiscal guidelines.

Direct allocations sound positive, but practical realities often reveal hidden fees or delays before funds reach council projects.

I dey wonder if this total non-interference claim truly reflects how local councils handle unexpected shortfalls in project funding.

Perhaps setting up an independent audit committee could ensure transparent tracking of all deductions and guarantee councils receive full allocations as stated.
