Evi: Nollywood’s First Musical Hits Some Sour Notes
Evi pushes Nollywood’s boundaries by delivering its first musical. Directed by Uyoyou Aida, it follows talented but arrogant singer Evi, whose career collapses and forces her on a journey of redemption. The film also tackles sexual harassment and the dangers of gambling in the music industry. We had high hopes for choreography and set design that could rival international musicals. Instead, stage sequences blend into a typical love story. Only the catchy hook “Call Me Evi Baby Super Star” managed to linger in our minds. Osas Okonyon delivers the standout performance as Evi, capturing both charisma and vulnerability. Uzor Arukwe offers solid support, though his overly tearful confrontation feels forced. The scene showing money spraying in the air neglects Nigeria’s laws against reckless cash displays. A deeper look at Evi’s sudden streaming success would have added credibility. Despite its pacing issues and missed opportunities, Evi earns a 6 out of 10 for its daring themes and original music.
