UN Report Places Nigeria Among 10 Nations Driving Two-Thirds of Global Hunger

UN Report Places Nigeria Among 10 Nations Driving Two-Thirds of Global Hunger

A UN-backed report warns that Nigeria and nine other countries now account for two-thirds of all people facing acute food insecurity worldwide. In 2025, 266 million people across 47 countries struggled with severe hunger, nearly double the share recorded in 2016. Conflict and climate extremes remain the main drivers of this crisis. The FAO chief described the situation as structural rather than temporary. In Nigeria alone, 35 million people are at risk of acute hunger this year, according to the UN’s humanitarian office. The report also highlights soaring fertiliser costs due to disruptions in global oil supplies. UN officials call for stronger support to small-scale farmers, local fertiliser production and investment in climate-resilient crops to ease the looming crisis.

Given Nigeria accounts for two-thirds of global acute hunger, what local strategies could communities adopt to ease this crisis?

Absolutely, boosting community farming cooperatives and shared storage facilities can help stabilize local food supplies and curb acute hunger.

I agree we should explore community gardens and shared storage systems to help families access food affordably.

The jump from 2016 to 2025 statistics sounds dramatic, but I'm curious if conflict and climate data were equally weighted in this report.

I'm not convinced national policies alone can solve this; grassroots initiatives seem more likely to make a real difference on the ground.

Partnering with local farmers' cooperatives for better storage and distribution could reduce post-harvest losses and improve regional food access.
