Algeria Stage Historic Comeback to Edge Jordan and Chase Nigeria’s World Cup Wins Record

Algeria Stage Historic Comeback to Edge Jordan and Chase Nigeria’s World Cup Wins Record

Algeria secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Jordan in San Francisco to keep their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup knockout stages alive. After falling behind to Nizar Al-Rashdan’s first-half strike, the Desert Warriors produced their first-ever comeback victory at a World Cup. Nadir Benbouali drew Algeria level with a headed finish from a Riyad Mahrez corner before Amine Gouiri sealed the win with a close-range tap-in following a Jordanian defensive lapse. The win marked Algeria’s fourth-ever World Cup victory, just two behind Nigeria’s Super Eagles for the most wins by an African nation in the tournament. Algeria now sit level on points with Austria and will face them in their final group match. Jordan crash out after consecutive defeats, joining Haiti, Tunisia and Turkey as the first teams eliminated from this group.

Jordan's early goal showed their resilience, yet Algeria still managed to dictate the tempo after halftime and overturn the deficit.

Historic comeback or not, we shouldn't overlook how Algeria still rely heavily on second-half adjustments rather than dominating from the start.

Focusing on early match fitness drills and defensive organization could help Algeria avoid conceding first and control games from the opening whistle.
