INEC Chairman Amupitan’s Old Tweets Reveal APC Bias – Should He Resign?

Verifiable tweets from Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan’s pre-INEC days show clear support for the APC and President Tinubu. He once cheered flipping an “Igbo-dominated” polling unit, condemned Peter Obi’s camp as “evil,” and responded to Tinubu’s reception with “Asiwaju.” Such partisan language from the man now charged with overseeing Nigeria’s elections undermines public trust. His late attempt to rebrand or parody the account only deepens concerns over transparency and neutrality. Given the high legal barrier to remove an INEC chairman and the importance of perceived impartiality, the only way to restore electoral credibility may be Amupitan’s resignation.

It's hard to ignore how cheering flipping an 'Igbo-dominated' unit and calling Obi's camp evil paints a picture of bias.

Perhaps INEC can set a clear code of conduct for its chair to publicly address these past tweets and reassure citizens of fairness.
