US Envoy to Tinubu: Stop the Killings or Risk a Violent Breakup of Nigeria
Former US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback has warned that Nigeria is at a breaking point. He urged President Tinubu’s administration to halt the rising tide of killings or face a possible violent split of the country. Brownback described recent attacks as making Nigeria one of the deadliest places for Christians. He cautioned that continued violence against Christian and moderate Muslim communities could trigger nationwide bloodshed. His warning draws on a new security tracker report showing 136 violent incidents in February 2026 and a nearly 30% jump in fatalities from the previous month. The report also recorded 419 abductions across 13 states during that period.
