Hervé Renard Sacked by Saudi Arabia Two Months Before 2026 World Cup

Hervé Renard Sacked by Saudi Arabia Two Months Before 2026 World Cup — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Saudi Arabia have dismissed coach Hervé Renard less than two months before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. Renard, who led the Green Falcons from 2019 to 2023 and returned at the end of 2024, had just come off a stint with France’s women’s team that saw quarterfinal finishes at both the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics. Former Greece coach Georgios Donis is reportedly in negotiations to take over. Saudi Arabia will face Spain, Uruguay and debutants Cape Verde in Group H, with all matches scheduled in the United States. The nation has appeared at six World Cups, its best run reaching the round of 16 in 1994. They stunned the world with a 2-1 win over eventual champions Argentina at Qatar 2022 and are set to host in 2034.

Totally! Shaking things up so near the tournament must feel like a rollercoaster for the squad.

Sacking a coach just weeks before the tournament feels abrupt, especially after Renard's recent return and his prior success with the Green Falcons.

Renard's dismissal might spark fresh tactics, though disruption so late could backfire without enough preparation time.

They should appoint an interim coach who already knows the squad well to minimize disruption before kickoff.
