Tinubu Approves Major NYSC Overhaul: Civilian to Lead, Military on Security
President Tinubu has approved sweeping reforms for the National Youth Service Corps. A civilian will now head the agency’s operations while the military continues to provide security for corps members. Key reforms include: • Technology-driven call-up process • Risk-sensitive deployment for better protection • Redesigned six-week orientation focused on leadership, entrepreneurship and digital skills • Skills-based primary assignments aligned with academic background • Modern governance structure with civilian operational leadership • National grading and certification for camp standards • New graduation ceremony and a professional, pride-reflecting uniform These changes aim to strengthen service delivery and boost professional development. But will they address the fear many graduates still feel about insecure deployments? In my view, removing military leadership risks weakening the discipline and unity that have long defined the scheme.
