NSCDC Nets Cable Vandals, Arrests Togolese Army Deserters in Lagos

NSCDC Nets Cable Vandals, Arrests Togolese Army Deserters in Lagos

The Lagos Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps arrested several suspects for cable vandalism, transformer theft and the illegal possession of lithium batteries. On Saturday, operatives acting on community tips and alerts from Proton Security Limited caught two individuals vandalising armoured cables at Okun Ajah. Another suspect was arrested for transformer cable theft in Shogunle, Oshodi, while four more were held for stealing eight lithium batteries in Lekki. Two suspects linked to the operations remain at large. The NSCDC also apprehended two deserters from the Togolese Army and handed them over for further investigation. The command praised its partnership with local communities, traditional rulers and private security firms, stressing that public cooperation is key to safeguarding critical infrastructure and prosecuting offenders.

It's interesting that NSCDC linked transformer theft, cable vandalism and lithium batteries in a single raid, but details on the battery offences remain thin.

I get the need for security crackdowns, but focusing on arrests alone won't end vandalism without fixing power infrastructure vulnerabilities.

Local associations could organise regular patrol shifts and share real time alerts with NSCDC, ensuring quicker response to cable theft attempts.
